SHPE Indiana and the Community

Mapping Education Towards Achievement (META) sixth annual event was held in Indianapolis, IN on October 6th 2006.  More than 400 post secondary Hispanic students from the central Indiana region participated in a series of informative career path workshops. 

SHPE Indiana members Hernando Munevar and Ruben Barron participated as guest speakers and conducted the science and engineering workshops.  The main purpose of the workshop was to talk about our experiences as engineers and inform META students about how college education has contributed to our career successes.  After talking to META students, we could see that they are facing many personal and educational challenges.  During the workshops, we tried to communicate that education continues to be the link to the American dream.

The META event was sponsored by Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, the Indiana Department of Education, and IVY Tech/Community Colleges.  SHPE Indiana’s participation was a success and we look forward for next year’s event!

SHPE Indiana got invited again and visited IPS Middle school. After an Engineering presentation, SHPE Indiana members introduced kids and parents to a hands on Engineering workshop. "Tower of Pasta" Students use spaghetti and marsh mellows to build a tower of pasta.
